Marquee Audio have carried out a significant sound reinforcement upgrade at one of London's most popular live venues — exactly a year after its opening.
Spread across four floors at Kings Cross, the 550-capacity Big Chill House has replaced the existing rig with Turbosound's NuQ fully-integrated networkable system.
Owned by the Cantaloupe Group/Big Chill, director Chris Greenwood is in charge of the company's music and programming. "The original system really didn't suit the room or our usage — which was a combination of DJ'’s, live bands and background music," he explained.
"As with the Big Chill Festival we are not just programming ambient chilled-out music — we go from folk to funk to house music and back."
The decision to change was a result of feedback from staff, artists and engineers. Chris Greenwood approached the company's regular suppliers Marquee Audio, explaining what they wanted to achieve and setting a budget.
Marquee Audio project manager Scott Wakelin says that the NuQ system ideally meets the new brief in that it provides an extremely smooth nearfield response and lends itself to the diversity of dynamic live music programming the venue tends to offer.
"What we have given them is a quite different design — a mixture of NuQ-15s and B-18s with NuQ-10s and TSB-212 (2 x 12) subs as delays, with NuQ-10s in the basement and NuQ-10s and TSB-212 on the first floor."
And Chris Greenwood confirms, "The new system is proving more versatile and easier to drive."
The swap-out took place without the loss of any trading and the Cantaloupe Group director is delighted — both with Marquee Audio's decision to recommend NuQ, and the speed with which they installed the system.
The original conversion of the Big Chill House cost £1.2m when it was carried out last summer.
