Part of a burgeoning brand which is rapidly spreading worldwide, the latest (3rd) Crystal club to open is in London. An ultra-fashionable private members club, where the rich rub shoulders with the famous, Crystal is already famous for its ultra-high quality sound and equally stratospheric prices.
Ensuring that the former is strictly maintained, Lebanon-based Thunder Electronics is designing and installing the audio system in every Crystal club - and using only Turbosound loudspeakers.
"There is one rule which has to be adhered to for every Crystal venue," says Thunder Electronics owner Louay Agha. "In most clubs the highest volume and quality is in the centre, with the peripheral areas seeing a falling off of the audio volume. But at Crystal, the sound has to be the same quality and volume throughout the venue."
This is not only in the two dimensions of lateral space. Another club rule is that clients are allowed to dance wherever they want, including on chairs and tables. So the sound has to be consistent in three dimensions - vertically as well as laterally.
The London venue is rectangular and on two levels. To make things even more interesting, the DJ is positioned in the centre, allowing clients to walk all around the DJ booth. To ensure the consistency of sound and volume, Thunder Electronics has deployed 24 TCS Compact TCS-081C mid-highs, complemented by six TCS-215C subs with an LMS-D24 system controller.
"I chose the TCS Compact series because it is compact and visually unobtrusive, but the sound has great punch," says Louay. "The club has a low ceiling, which meant that 18" subs would have made the sound boomy. But the 2 x 15" speakers were perfect, keeping the bass loud but very tight.
"Frankly, Turbosound loudspeakers are the only ones I want to use. I've never had a problem with a Turbosound product and they always deliver what's expected. In all the Crystal venues the system is loud but it has great definition, the sound is truly hi-fi."
With Princes William and Harry among the founding members of Crystal's London venue, the ultra-exclusive clientele is sure to be impressed by Turbosound's hi-fidelity sound.
"The owners of Crystal love the sound, they're really happy with it in all the clubs. That's why they always come to me," smiles Louay with refreshing bluntness. "They say 'We want this, you provide it'. With Turbosound's quality and cost-effectiveness, they always get what they expect and we never have to argue about budget."
With Louay currently working on Crystal venues, with more sure to follow, it seems that the Turbosound quality and Crystal class will soon be working hand-in-hand across the globe.
