Top German venues get a Turbosound makeover

The outdoor music industry may have gone into hibernation over the winter months, but that doesn't mean that Turbosound has seen any lowering of its profile.

Quite the opposite in fact, with German audio company BLL-Veranstaltungstechnik equipping no less than 11 clubs and restaurants with Turbosound loudspeakers over the winter, as well as servicing many corporate events with the company's large inventory of Aspect® enclosures.

Two of the most recent installations by the North Rhine/Westphalia-based company have seen major nightclubs re-equipped with Turbosound loudspeakers, ensuring that the constantly evolving expectations of their customers continue to be satisfied.

Catering for lovers of Techno and other harder styles of dance music, Rheingoldsaal in Düsseldorf is located at the city’s main railway station and has had a major system upgrade, both of the club's dance areas being re-equipped with Turbosound systems.

The main area features six TXD-252 dual 15" active/passive full range enclosures, complemented by eight dual 18" subs delivering the pounding beats that are so fundamental to Techno music. Two TXD-151 two way passive enclosures act as DJ monitors, with control by a pair of LMS-D24 system controllers.

With a very high ceiling and large area to cover, system designer Carsten Eichstädt took the unusual step of hanging the six TXD-252s from the ceiling on long hawsers, angling them down to maximise the impact of the sound on the dance floor. This also added an unusual visual element to the club’s aesthetics.

"The question of aesthetics had to be taken into account," says Carsten. "Especially considering Rheingoldsaal's core music policy. It is a very big club, so it looked better flying big boxes rather than using smaller speakers. They deliver high quality, punchy sound throughout the club and they also fit perfectly with the club's image."

Rheingoldsaal's second area—the Orange Club—plays music that is less relentlessly hardcore, so smaller enclosures were deemed more in keeping with its ambience. Here four TXD-121, two-way 12" passive enclosures cover the dance floor, with two TSB-212 dual 12" bandpass subs, a pair of TXD-151s for a DJ monitors, controlled by one LMS-D24.

One of the major challenges faced by both systems is that the club doesn't close over the weekend period, meaning the speakers are in continual use for up to 36 hours.

"Reliability is extremely important at Rheingoldsaal," says Carsten. "It is a demanding environment for any loudspeaker. As there are no noise level limits in the venue, the system is always playing at high volume and when it is delivering those levels for a long period, you need to be absolutely certain that the loudspeakers are up to the task!

"But Techno and House are very dynamic styles of music. The systems need to deliver deep, punchy bass, clear high frequencies and have enough headroom to deliver that high quality for up to 36 hours of non stop music."

Meanwhile, Dortmund's Rushhour is a major venue which features six separate dance floors and can accommodate over 4,000 clubbers. Playing a wide variety of music, each style has its own dedicated area and here BLL- Veranstaltungstechnik was brought in to replace the audio systems in the House and R&B areas.

Less physically punishing to the loudspeakers than the Rheingoldsaal installation perhaps, here clarity and accurate reproduction of the full frequency spectrum were the fundamental requirements.

The House area was equipped with four TXP-151 full-range, self-powered cabinets, complemented by four TXP-118 self-powered subs, while the R&B area had four TXD-15M full-range speakers and two TXD-218 dual 18" subs installed.

"The TXP and TXD ranges offer the perfect match between excellent sound quality and budget," says Carsten. "There are always budgetary constraints with club installations and Rheingoldsaal and Rushhour are both demanding venues in terms of the areas that a relatively small number of loudspeakers have to cover.

"The TXP and TXD speakers provided the ideal solution and our clients in both clubs are very impressed at the price:performance ratio."
