Melbourne's Pro Light and Sound provided audio and lighting for the ever growing Kiss My Grass festival on Australia Day and for the second year in a row, selected Turbosound Aspect for the main stage.
Kiss My Grass was held at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and was a huge success with other 18,000 people through the gates. The festival, run by Kiss FM with Future Entertainment, showcased a massive line-up of DJ's and bands.
The show coincided with the arrival of a full Aspect® TA-890 touring demo system so Stav from Pro Light and Sound was only too happy to use the touring system on the main stage and his own Aspect TA-880 system on the Dirty Kiss stage. Both systems have identical components and performance with the touring system featuring integral hardware for quick and easy flying.
The system supplied for the main stage consisted of a combination of ground stacked and flown cabinets. Left and right stacks each consisted of five TA-890H mid-highs and nine TA-890L dual 15" subs. A centre block of six TSW-218's provided sub-bass support. In-fill was courtesy of a single Aspect Wide TA-500 per side. The ground stacked system was complimented by two flown clusters, each consisting of four TA-890H mid-highs to cover the grassed areas of the bowl. The system was powered by four Turbosound touring racks consisting of Turbosound branded amplifiers in a floating rack and multi-pinned for quick and error-proof connection both from the processors and to the loudspeakers. Tim McCall and Dan Orton from Turbosound in the UK were on hand to assist and enjoyed a beautiful Melbourne day.
After the seeing the Aspect touring system go up, Stav commented, "As you would expect from Turbosound, the rigging system was the most intelligent and engineered I have seen on any flown system, foolproof and easy to use without the problem of pins and bolts which are easily lost."
Foldback on the main stage included TXD-15M (15"/1.4" biamp wedges) while DJ monitors and drumfill was courtesy of two TXD-252 (2x15"/1.4") and two TQ-425 (dual 15" subs), all powered by Lab.gruppen fP series amplifiers and processed by Turbosound LMS series processors.
The system performed very well with excellent coverage right throughout the bowl. One of the aims of the combined ground and flown design was to contain as much energy as possible within the bowl to avoid noise complaints from nearby residents. A quick simulation in Turbosound's GigMate software confirmed the best trim height and angles between cabinets. The independent consultant measuring noise at the "problem" residential locations reported no issues while sound throughout the bowl and grassed area was loud and clean with the system comfortably sitting at 118dBc at the FOH desk for the whole event.
The second Aspect system at Kiss My Grass consisted of six TA-880H mid-highs and 12 TA-880L dual 15" subs, and kept its crowd dancing all day, again without excess spill onto nearby stages.
