Electric
Circus The
Electric Circus nightclub recently opened its doors in
Adelaide and
has already proven to be a popular 'underground' club and
bar. Psycho
Acoustics were chosen to install the audio system and based
their design around a Turbosound loudspeaker and Lab.Gruppen
amplifier combination. The
brief from owners Paul Glen and James Hillier was to create
a completely unique high-end sound system with huge SPL,
tailored specifically for programmed and live electronic
music. Micah Taylor from Psycho Acoustics stated: "I chose
Turbosound's new co-axial three way TQ-445 top boxes with
Turbo's THL-828.2 dual 18" subs, which in my opinion are the
best I've ever heard. These massive subs are often used in
outdoor environments, but I believe you can never have
enough bottom end and they have heaps. Also, my competition
think I'm crackers for using lightweight regulated switch
mode amplifiers for my installation, but regardless of the
ambient temperature, my amp rack runs super cool and the
sound is not affected by temperature fluctuations. It's the
best sounding club in Adelaide, hands down." Electric Circus
has enjoyed great success since opening with all national
and international DJ's and acts giving the venue rave
revues. The
dance floor is powered by Lab.Gruppen fP series products
with an fP2600 looking after mids and highs and fP3400's
powering both low-mids and the subwoofers. An LMS-D6 speaker
management system provides processing and limiting for the
3-way dance floor system while a Rane RPM26z (2x6 DSP
processor) provides overall system processing and
distribution for the whole venue. The impressive looking
audio rack is built into a wall on the dance floor and is
actually a feature of the venue. Audio
in the lounge area comes from Impact 80.2 speakers on a
delay feed from the dance floor system. The Impact 80's are
powered by a Lab.Gruppen iP2100 and processed by the Rane
RPM26z. For
the distinctive Turbosound look, all speakers were supplied
in TurboBlue with Psycho Acoustics fitting custom
stainless steel name plates to the subs so that everyone
knows it's a Turbosound system. As Micah says: "It's the
best sounding club in Adelaide, hands down." Following
the successful installation at Electric Circus, the record
store above the club was also fitted out with Turbosound
Impact 50's and a TSB-110 subwoofer, again supplied in
TurboBlue.

The
venue has two distinct areas: the dance floor and the more
relaxed - but still pumping - lounge area. The dance floor
system is based around four TQ-445's which are compact
3-way, bi-amp cabinets consisting of 12", 6.5" and 1"
components. These are complemented by two HiLight THL-828.2,
dual 18" subwoofers. The TQ-445's were chosen for a couple
of reasons: firstly, the compact size and high SPL
capability fitted in with both the aesthetics and
performance requirements of the venue. The second attraction
to the TQ-445 was the horn loaded 6.5" mid-range and 1"
compression driver combination. Many club systems use large
compression drivers which can sound harsh (especially in low
ceiling applications like the Electric Circus). However the
mid/high combination favoured by Turbosound provides a
smooth response even at high SPL's.
DJ
monitoring is provided by one of the new QLight DP
(Digitally Powered) products. A single wall mounted TQ-310DP
provides the DJ with plenty of SPL and bottom end. The
TQ-310DP features a 10" woofer and 1" compression driver. It
is self-powered and runs in bi-amp mode via two internal
800w D-class amplifiers. Processing for the TQ-310DP is also
on-board with a 96kHz DSP looking after EQ, driver
alignment, crossover and limiting.
