Turbosound loudspeakers figure heavily in the sound of numerous clubs and bars around the world, with London-based Electracoustic responsible for many club sound systems in its home territory.

Specialising in compact, high-quality installations that help solve quality and noise leakage issues in smaller venues, Electracoustic's skills come into play particularly in the central London area, where clubs are often located among private residences, or in close proximity to other venues and businesses. The company's most recent projects include Kabaret's Prophecy, a prestigious club in central London featuring Turbosound's QLight™ systems, and Bar 98, a stylish bar/restaurant in the city's Stoke Newington area that has been nominated for Technology Bar of the Year 2004 (Theme magazine).

Although a small and intimate venue, Kabaret's Prophecy is finished and equipped to a very high standard, having completed an intensive refurbishment programme earlier this year. Located below a restaurant and jazz club, Kabaret's Prophecy presented Electracoustic with a difficult noise emission challenge to solve, in addition to the acoustic issue of the venue's low ceiling. Electracoustic's Jon Trotter explained: "We specified Turbosound's QLight™ loudspeakers for the dance-floor system, installing four TQ-310 enclosures with two TQ-115 bass units, due to the products' sound quality and price/performance ratio. The TQ-310's asymmetric trapezoidal format, together with the design's rotatable HF horn, also made it easy for us to slot the systems into custom recessed housings built into the room's false ceiling - an approach we adopted to address the low room height. To help solve the noise leakage issue, we used custom anti-vibration hanging points, with neoprene inserts. The TQ-115 bass enclosures are enclosed in a retro finish housing, and are mounted on vibration-absorbent matting to minimise flanking transmission through the structure.

A Biamp Audia digital processor is used to control the system, set up with presets to manage the multiple volume levels that can be selected - for example, the installation's volume limit can be raised once the restaurant above has closed for the night. The overall results give the club's DJs want they need in terms of quality and performance, while balancing these needs with the stringent environmental health requirements of the locality."

Electracoustic's installation at Bar 98 also typifies the company's approach with smaller venues, and employs a combination of Turbosound's compact mid-high TCS-35 enclosures, with TSB-110 and TQ-115 bass systems. This approach is favoured by Electracoustic, due to the smooth-sounding top end of the TCS-35's titanium tweeter, which continues Turbosound's tradition of HF performance and reflects its philosophy of using the compression drivers of larger systems in the higher end of their frequency range.

Although not designed as a full-on club environment, Bar 98 does tend to get louder as the evening progresses, and the brief called for a high-quality background system during the day, but with sufficient capacity and headroom to handle a live band or DJ at night. Featuring sophisticated video systems, including large plasma and LCD screens, the venue is spread across two floors. The upper level utilises six TCS-35's in a distributed system supported at the low end by four TSB-110 bass units mounted under seat bases. Electracoustic has installed a similar arrangement for the lower floor, using six TSC-35's again, together with two TQ-115 bass enclosures.

The TCS-35 units are suspended from anti-vibration ceiling and wall brackets, similar to those used for Kabaret's Prophecy. Powered by MC2 amplifiers, the system is controlled via a BSS Soundweb. Electracoustic has been installing Turbosound loudspeakers in the London club scene for over ten years, with its numerous credits including Heaven Nightclub in Charing Cross, with Turbosound TXD and Impact series loudspeakers, in addition to older models. Turbosound TCS units also feature in Eagle, a West End bar/diner; in Escape, a Soho video bar, and in Bar Kudos, another stylish, up-market venue in the Charing Cross area.

In addition, Electracoustic has installed Turbosound products into other types of commercial premises, including two restaurants in the Barbican Centre.
