The Academy Music Group has opened the doors to its new venue, the £4 million Carling Academy Newcastle. Headlining the opening night were The Futureheads, supported by two other bands from NE England - Field Music and Kubichek!. Among the first UK live music venues to feature a Turbosound Aspect® system, the Carling Academy Newcastle represents an important addition to the UK touring circuit. Originally built as The New Westgate picture house in 1927, the impressive 2,000-capacity art deco building joins the other Academy venues in Brixton, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Islington and Liverpool, as well as West London's Shepherd's Bush Empire.

Marquee Audio's system design for the new venue's main room includes some 30 Aspect loudspeakers and comprises four trapezoidal Aspect TA-880H mid-high enclosures flown 2 x 2 on either side of the proscenium arch, with a further 3 x TA-880H ground-stacked on each side of the stage. Handling the bottom end are 6 x TA-890L Touring Bass cabinets, ground-stacked each side, plus 4 x TSW-218 double-18" subs. Marquee Audio has also installed four further TA-880H mid-highs as dance-floor fills, underpinned by 4 x TA-880L cabinets, while 6 x TQ-315 QLight™ loudspeakers handle balcony and under-balcony delays.

The venue's secondary room, the 400-capacity Carling Academy 2 Newcastle, can take feeds from the main venue or operate as a stand-alone facility. Marquee's system for this room features Turbosound's 4 x TQ-445 QLight™ cabinets with 4 x TQ-425 subs, plus 4 x TXD-121 units and 2 x TXD-218 double-18" subs. The venue's sound systems are being controlled via 5 x Turbosound LMS-D26 digital loudspeaker management systems.

Academy Music Group's Property & Development Manager, Archie McIntosh, commented:

"We invest heavily in PA and lighting equipment at all our venues and set high production values, so that all AMG sites can offer the same high quality, in-house production as standard - not only to international touring acts, but also to talent on the way up looking for a high class, professional environment. We have worked with Marquee Audio on several installations, from the first one in Birmingham in 2000, through to the openings of Academy venues in Glasgow, Liverpool and Islington. This Turbosound Aspect system for Newcastle is a really exciting development for us as a group."

Marquee Audio's incorporation of the trapezoidal version of Aspect in the system design for Newcastle is underlining the flexibility of this innovative loudspeaker design. The TA-880H has been designed specifically for fixed installations, using the identical drivers and Polyhorn™ technology as the touring version - with the same ultra high-efficiency and sonic clarity - which has been thoroughly proven across numerous tours and festivals throughout this year. The Newcastle system design is also showcasing Turbosound's new double-18" subwoofer, the TSW-218, which is setting a new low-frequency benchmark in terms of level, accuracy and speed. Throughout the design process, Dan Orton, Turbosound's Applications Engineer, provided Marquee Audio with general advice and design assistance, and also provided the EASE modelling data that helped determine the system parameters.

Paul McMullan, Turbosound's UK Sales Manager, commented:

"With Aspect now thoroughly well recognised as one of the optimum loudspeaker solutions for touring, it is very satisfying to see it also being deployed as a permanent fixture in a live performance environment, and particularly at such a high profile venue. Marquee Audio's system for the Carling Academy Newcastle emphasises the growing market acceptance that Aspect is enjoying, as well as its suitability for the widest range of venues. We are very pleased to see Aspect being used in such a quality-conscious environment."

The Carling Academy Newcastle's second night featured a set from Goldfrapp, with The Kills, Rooster and Happy Mondays scheduled for upcoming dates at the new venue.
