TXD series loudspeakers continue to solve acoustic and sound quality issues in a huge range of venue from clubs, bars and restaurants, to houses of worship and colleges.

On the education front, one of the most recent UK installations is in the New Hall at Winchester College, a private school in the south of England, established in the 14th century. Designed and installed by Winchester based audio-visual specialist Whitwam, the college's new sound system includes TXD-121 loudspeakers for front-of-house, with TCS-20 units as balcony delays.

Winchester College's brief for the new system was for a high-intelligibility installation, which would be used predominantly for speech reinforcement during lectures and presentations, as well as for medium-level music reinforcement on occasions. The system also had to fit unobtrusively into the hall's architecture, as although built in the 1960s, the New Hall incorporates a considerable amount of older material in its fabric, including carved wooden panelling that dates from the 17th century and which was originally part of the school's chapel.

Dave Harding, managing director of Whitwam, explained: "Prior to our installation of a permanent system, Winchester College had been hiring in equipment as and when required-as well as being inconvenient, this arrangement naturally made it very difficult to achieve a visually successful outcome. Therefore, the College took the decision to look for a more permanent solution. We arranged listening tests in the New Hall, enabling the school to evaluate competitive products in their own environment, with the final short list resulting in their selection of the Turbosound TXD products as representing the best fit, on perceived sound quality as well as budget. The guys at Turbosound were extremely helpful, even making us special sets of mounting brackets overnight, so we could site the loudspeakers to suit the construction of the stone walls, and obtain the necessary degree of tilt to achieve the required HF directivity and coverage across the hall's auditorium. The overall result is that Winchester College now has a high-clarity reinforcement system, which integrates with the interior of the hall extremely effectively-both aesthetically and acoustically."

The first event to utilise the new sound system was an opening lecture to the Friends of Winchester College. In addition to the TXD-121 and TCS-20 loudspeakers, Whitwam's solution also included an Allen & Heath console, QSC power amplifiers and a Sennheiser radio mic system. With its company history dating back to 1909, Whitwam now specialises solely in audio-visual hire and installation, across the corporate, education and entertainments markets, with a particular focus on the more intriguing and unusual projects.
