Yumla
Bar The
Yumla Bar was among the first installations in Hong Kong to
feature TXD series loudspeakers.
Supplied by Phoenix Audio, Turbosound's exclusive distributor for the Chinese territories, the TXD-based system was designed and installed by Yumla's in-house engineer, local producer Dan F, of Disuye Records. From the outset, Dan had a very clear idea of the kind of image that Yumla should project, and was keen to ensure that although a small venue, it would nevertheless have one of the best sounding bar systems in the city. an commented: "Yumla is providing the city's underground music fans with the quality of venue, and sound system, that they've deserved for a long time. So many bars in Hong Kong have tried to do the DJ / music thing, but don't really understand the requirements when it comes to audio. Luckily, the TXD speakers were available at the same time as we were designing the club back in 2003, and they could've been custom made for the place! Loud enough to really kick, but clear enough to hear the person talking next to you. That's what defines a good sound system as far as we're concerned." The Yumla's system design features a single TXD-118 sub, plus four TXD-121 full range units surrounding the main bar area, while a pair of TXD-081 units provide coverage towards the front door and seating booths. Noise complaints can make or break a bar in the densely populated city, so system levels had to be biased towards the heart and back end of the bar, with hardly any sound near to the exits. Dan continued: "Our main concern was keeping the system comfortable for all people, a balance both inside and outside the bar. You have to cater for folks who want to chat with friends and those who want to party – achieving this requires a very strictly controlled system in a bar of this small scale. At the same time you can't forget that there are people living across the road who might not share your enthusiasm for tech-house or minimal at 4AM! Yumla fills a distinct gap in the HK market. Despite the commercial mentality of this city, there are still a lot of people who love alternative genres of music such as funk, soul, electro, breaks, dub, punk, ska, jungle, house, techno etc ... and we provide a comfortable place to hang out and listen." Keeping everything in check is an LMS-D6 feeding a rack of Crest amplifiers, with all EQ duties being carried out by the LMS-D6. In the DJ booth itself, twin Technics Mark 5K's rest on a 200kg concrete table embedded into the floor, which may sound excessive but as DJs and patrons are literally face-to-face, the weight of the table allows dancing punters to be right on top of the decks without a stylus ever skipping. Pioneer CDJ 1000 Mark 3's and a choice of Allen & Heath Xone 92 or Urei 1605 mixers are also installed, with full-time Serato Scratch and NI Traktor Scratch interfaces waiting for DJs to plug in laptops, plus dedicated internet encoding hardware broadcasting live 24/7 to the servers of Awdio internet radio.
